Here are some games I would recommend:

Megaman ZX and Megaman ZX Advent - Pretty nice addition to the megaman series.

Final Fantasy 3 - old school FF FTW.

Final Fantasy XII : Revenant Wings - RTS game, its pretty nice.

Children of Mana - dungeon crawler, looks cute.

Pokemon Diamond/Pearl - the good 'ol pokemon games.

Elite Beat Agents - Similar to o2jam, but with an added twist.

Cake Mania 1 and 2 - I just love cakes.

Warioware - funny mini-games.

Viewtiful Joe - Matrix Action.

Trauma Center - Surgery game, pretty good but be sure to get a screen protector.

Advance Wars: Days of Ruin - Turn Based Game, Tactics FTW~!

Rune Factory: A Fantasy Harvest Moon - Dungeon Crawling while planting. xD

The Legend of Zelda: The Phantom Hourglass - Stylus fun and cuteness <3

Brain Age 1 and 2 - good brain training.

I'm gonna second the ZX recommendation. If you like the old MMX and MMZ series, this should be up your alley. It plays like MMZ, but requires a LOT more diversity in playing because you'll be switching models around.

Although I don't own an actual DS.

But I guess Harvest Moon is also a good choice, if you want a break from action and puzzle games

For multiplayer, I'd suggest Mario Hoops 3 on 3 and Mario and Sonic Olympics. Animal Crossing doesn't seem bad. If you want to, try Nintendogs xD.

I'd suggest a slot-1 device like a CycloDs Evolution, R4DS, DSTT, M3 Simply, M3DS Real, or something of the ilk.

Uhh download play... I really dont know. I hardly ever play with friends.
